AB  - The vectorial movement of proteins requires specific recognition by
      components of the vesicular trafficking machinery. A protein,  <prot>sorting
      nexin-1</prot> (<prot>SNX1</prot>) , was identified in a human cell line that bound to a region
      of the  <prot>epidermal growth factor receptor</prot> (<prot>EGFR</prot>)  containing the lysosomal
      targeting code. <prot>SNX1</prot> contains a region of homology to a yeast vacuolar
      sorting protein, and overexpression of <prot>SNX1</prot> decreased the amount of <prot>EGFR</prot>
      on the cell surface as a result of enhanced rates of constitutive and
      ligand-induced degradation. Thus,  <prot>SNX1</prot>  is likely to play a role in sorting
       <prot>EGFR</prot>  to lysosomes.
